Richard Avedon - Darkness and Light

After viewing this film, answer the following questions:

1. Richard Avedon talks about how compelling people's face are to photograph. He mentions his interest in the face being about reading people's faces and how fascinating they are to him. He uses the words contradiction, complexity and connected when he refers to taking portraits. What do you think he means? How do you think those words apply to portrait photography? Discuss each of the words

2. After he leaves the world of fashion photography, Avedon moves towards portraits that are simple, clean, without props and on a white background. What do you think he achieved in doing this? What does a white background do for the subject being photographed?

3. Photography literally stops something dead. Unlike painting, the creation of a photograph stops an actual moment in time. That moment is gone forever, yet it remains frozen forever in the photograph. Reflect on the contradiction of this statement.

4. Any other comments you might have about the film itself or about Richard Avedon.

Write your reflection in a google docs and share it with me at lisa.silverman@tdsb.on.ca, or print and submit by Monday. We will finish watching the film on Friday.

Welcome to Photography At LCI

First Assignment. Daily Photo.

https://www.instagram.com/lakeshoresilverman/?hl=en

Using your phone, or a point and shoot camera you will take a photo every day. This is to get your creative juices flowing, to keep you loose, to keep you observing and imagining...

Create an instagram account.
If you have one already, I suggest creating a new one for this class - it should not be personal photos of friends and family, but great photos that you take.
Follow me and I will follow you.
My instagram account is Lakeshoresilverman. You can find me at that link up there.

Once a week I will post a weekly word that you will add to your instagram daily photo. This will be due every Friday and will be based on a word that I post. You can interpret it however you'd like, but keep in mind, you should be striving for great photos, great compositions, and great exposures no matter what.

Monday will be gratitude Mondays. That means your photo should say something about what you feel grateful for. Again, a great photo, not just taking a photo of a thing that makes you feel grateful. Create the photo.

The first word is LIGHT. It's due next Friday Feb. 10.

Starting today, you should set up your account on Instagram, follow me and take a photo a day. Keep in mind that you should keep these photos appropriate for school and use extreme care with personal information online.

Safety Online

1. Use privacy settings. We will review this in class. Turn this on and only followers you approve can view your profile.

2. Do not use your face for your profile picture. Use one of your fabulous photos!
Also, do not use your first and last name. Come up with a pseudonym for yourself.

3. Location settings. Do not share the location of where you shot the photos.

4. Following and Followers. Don't follow anyone and everyone. Follow carefully. I'm only following photographers I know. You can follow each other, but keep the privacy settings turned off to approve those who follow you.

5. Have your parents or guardians approve your posts. I know, I know. You don't want them seeing your stuff, but it's actually good to have an adult making sure that you're safe. You can show them how to check followers and comments and the photos you have.

6. Keep the photos clean and anonymous. This is not the time to post selfies and photos of your friends. This is for artistic photos that you take. Keep things anonymous and you will stay safe.

You'll have plenty of time to shoot fabulous portraits later that won't get posted online, but could end up in your portfolio. For now, keep online shots anonymous.
